FORT MYERS - Ryan Westmoreland, the Red Sox [team stats]’ No. 1 prospect, will undergo brain surgery in Phoenix on Tuesday and has been placed on medical leave.

The 19-year-old outfielder has been diagnosed with a cavernous malformation in his brain and has left minor league camp to seek treatment, general manager Theo Epstein announced yesterday.
